Go Commando Personal Training

"Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever. That surrender, even the smallest act of giving up, stays with me. So when I feel like quitting, I ask myself, which would I rather live with?" - Lance Armstrong

WOMENS FITNESS

THE SUZINATOR AND I TRAINED TWO OF THE WOMENS FITNESS TEAM @ REGENTS PARK RECENTLY...SEE WHAT THEY THOUGHT BELOW

When sub-editor Ellie and I strolled into Regent’s Park on a sunny Thursday morning for our first taste of Bulgarian Bags, we really didn’t know what we were in for.
Surrounded by beautiful weather and wildlife, we met the trainer, Rob (Go Commando Personal Training) who is an ex-marine and sought-after London-based personal trainer (alarm bells should have started ringing at this point) who was accompanied by Suzie (Ultimate Aussie Training) who we later found out was aptly nicknamed The Suzinator (again, alarm bells).
When we were introduced to the bags, they really didn’t look that frightening. Imagine a travel pillow, made of leather… that weighed a hell of a lot. We were pleased to hear that they came in different weights, and Ellie and I both had our eyes on the 8kg baby versions.
The warm-up lured us into a false sense of security. A few mobility and stretching exercises, running around the park and bodyweight exercises got our blood pumping and ready for action – or so we thought. We later discovered that nothing could really prepare your body for your first Bulgarian Bags workout. We were about to learn the true meaning of a full body workout.
We started with something called the spin test. This involves spinning the bag over your head literally using your whole body – your legs, core and sides are just as much a part of this as your arms and shoulders – a number of times followed by dropping the bag to the ground and performing press-ups with your hands on the bag. Repeat this sequence as fast as you can with proper form – against the clock. Rob is at hand to make sure that there’s no sloppy technique (damn him!) and Suzie shows us the ropes using a ridiculously heavy 22kg bag. No need to show off, Suz!
We progressed onto slightly heavier 12kg bags after a while (despite our protesting) to really push the boundaries, and by this point there was no stopping the dripping sweat and groans. A great way to spend your early mornings…
We followed up with a few more whole body moves such as the power snatch and jumping squats with the bags on our shoulders, and by the end of it, we were just about ready to drop. After Rob showed us a few stretches to finish off, we took our tired, muddy bodies back to work.
We were talking about the bags for days and ached like never before. The workout was hard, but the benefits were amazing. Despite our inabilities to reach high shelves and walk down the stairs without sheer pain for almost a week, we were left wanting more. Maybe next time we’ll tackle those maces that Rob showed us…
If you’re interested in taking on the Bulgarian Bags, contact Rob: rob@gocommandopersonaltraining.co.uk and let us know how you got on!
